A large opening on a deep building, such as this, requires careful planning and specifying of the lintel beam above. It’s important to consider snow loads in all calculations and not just the weight from the roof structure alone, to avoid interference with the main door operation caused by excessive beam deflection.
For this opening, we specified and designed a steel flitch beam, which was produced to our drawings by a local steel supplier. The flitch beam consisted of 10mm steel sandwiched between two timber beams and bolted through to a specified bolting pattern. It produced a heavy lintel that was tough to get into position, took time to specify, but this detail is what the project demanded.
